How to tell customers politely if they didn't give you a proper amount of tips?
filed in Xdela Community on May.28, 2010
I work as a food delivery driver. Sometimes after customers had given me the tips, they asked me: "Is it cool?" Sometimes it’s really that bad, but I really hate to say "no" (you know, it sounds so impolite and disrespectful to customers). But, if I’ve been asked this question again, I really want to tell them the truth one way or another (because it keeps bothering me every time). I believe you feel the same way as I do if you’re a driver. So, is there anyway to tell the customers politely that they have not given proper amount of tips.

About the only thing you can do is this…If they ask you if the tip they gave you is enough don’t answer yes or no…tell them the precentage they left you, ex. "The bill’s 30 bucks, you gave me 3 dollars, that’s 10%. Yeah, that’s fine, that’s what most people give me." OR "The bills 30 bucks, you gave me a dollar, I usually get about 10% of the bill, but, hey, that’s cool."—If they can’t do the math in their head, which they probably can’t, they’ll ask you what 10% is, this is your chance to ask for a bigger tip without "asking". Tell them it’s $3 and if they really give a hoot they’ll get you the other $2.
Other than this method I haven’t found anything to say that doesn’t wind up with me in trouble because a customer complained.
Good luck and may the 20% God shine on you always!

A tip is not required. It is a gratuity. THey do not HAVE to give you anything.
Offer the best service you can and be satisfied with what you recieve, or I would suggest finding employment that is not dependent on gratuities.
Some people are just cheap and there isn’t much you can do about that.

How about… "Well, usually customers give me (x%, $x) but whatever you’re comfortable with is fine."

I would feel there really isn’t a "No that isn’t enough tip, you need to give me more". After all tips are not required they are something given as a gratuity for service done well or excellent. Just try to do even better and hope that you will get a better tip next time.

you can’t tipping is an extra something that should not be expected. now I understand that some jobs only pay by tipping however it is not a safe or secure job.
It would be very disrespectful to tell a customer that they did not tip you well enough.
I went to one restaurant where my waitress was horrible!!! she never checked our drinks our food we had to flag down other waitresses to get service (during a not so busy after rush lunch restaurant less than half full) I still gave her a tip and she complained in front of me.
I made sure I talked to the manager about her after that. not just about her attitude but her poor performance if she had just been happy with the tip I did give (which she should have been grateful she got a damn penny!!) I would never have complained about her appalling service.
edit my bill was 20 I gave her a 5 dollar tip she was complaining about a 20% tip!!!

You should really say that it isn’t cool buddy because I make my money on tips! I’m not sure if people ever care about that fact or even care!

if you are upset with the amount of tips you are being given, maybe you should make a tip card. When you are asked if the tip is alright, hand them the card as a guide. Make the card professional though, print them out on a computer. Write things such as: !5% Average service, 20% Good service, 25% Exceptional service.

YOU NEVER complain about your tip!

It’s bad form to ask for a larger tip or complain. The trouble with delivery driving jobs is that people believe you are being paid adequately by your employer and that tipping isn’t necessary, or that the delivery charge is already taken care of. The only way I would see is to make sure you give them change that allows for a tip more easily, like if their change is $10 and you hand them a ten dollar bill, your chances of getting a tip might be better if you give them two fives, or a five and five ones.
