How do I convert mp4 files into a form that Windows Movie Maker recognizes?

I have a bunch of mp4 files from my Happauge which I need to edit in Windows Movie Maker, but it doesn’t seem to recognize them or something. Any suggestions on how I may be able to convert the files to wmv or something for free/cheap? Also, converted some to avi and they only appear [...]
